The United Nations designated the first Monday of October of every year as World Habitat Day in 1985.

It is celebrated to reflect on the state of our habitats, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter.

This day reminds the world that we all have the power and the responsibility to shape the future of our cities and towns.

It was first celebrated in 1986 with the theme “Shelter is My Right”.

This year, World Habitat Day will be celebrated on 4 October.

The theme for World Habitat Day 2021 is ‘accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world‘.

Various activities around the world are organized to examine the issues of rapid urbanization and its impact on the environment and human poverty.

Activities may include awards ceremonies, including the “Habitat Scroll of Honour” award.

The Habitat Scroll of Honour award was launched by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme in 1989.

It is currently the most prestigious human settlements award in the world.
